What Is Car Tax (Vehicle Excise Duty)?
Car tax, officially known as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), is a tax levied on all vehicles used or kept on public roads in the United Kingdom. It is collected by the DVLA and the revenue goes to the Treasury. Despite being commonly called “road tax,” the money is not ring-fenced for road maintenance.
Every vehicle kept on a public road must either be taxed or have a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) in place. Driving without valid tax is a criminal offence that can result in fines of up to 1,000 pounds, automatic penalty notices, wheel clamping, and even vehicle seizure by the DVLA.
The amount of tax you pay depends on when the vehicle was first registered and its CO2 emissions. Electric vehicles are currently exempt from road tax, while the highest-emitting vehicles pay over 2,000 pounds in their first year. After the first year, most vehicles pay a standard rate plus a supplement if the list price exceeded 40,000 pounds.

Why Check Tax Status Before Buying a Car
Since October 2014, road tax no longer transfers with the vehicle when it is sold. This means that even if the seller tells you the car is taxed until next year, the tax will be automatically cancelled when the DVLA processes the change of ownership. You will need to tax the vehicle in your own name before you can legally drive it.
Checking the current tax status before buying also helps you understand the ongoing costs of ownership. A vehicle with high CO2 emissions could cost significantly more in annual tax than a cleaner alternative. For vehicles registered before April 2017, annual tax rates range from zero pounds for the lowest-emission vehicles to over 600 pounds for the highest emitters.
A vehicle that has been SORN for an extended period may raise questions about why it was taken off the road. It could have been stored during a period of non-use, or it might indicate problems that made it uneconomical to keep road-legal. Either way, it is worth investigating further.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the car tax check free?
Yes, PlateCheck provides free car tax status checks using real-time data from the DVLA. You can check as many vehicles as you like without charge.
What does SORN mean?
SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It means the vehicle has been declared as not being used on public roads. A SORNed vehicle does not need to be taxed or have an MOT, but it cannot be driven or parked on public roads.
Can I drive a car with no tax?
No. It is illegal to drive or keep a vehicle on a public road without valid road tax. The only exception is driving directly to a pre-booked MOT test. Penalties include fines of up to £1,000, wheel clamping, and vehicle seizure.
How do I tax my car?
You can tax your vehicle online at gov.uk/vehicle-tax, at a Post Office, or by phone. You will need the V5C logbook or the V11 reminder letter, and a valid MOT certificate if the vehicle requires one.
Does tax transfer when I buy a used car?
No. Since October 2014, road tax no longer transfers with the vehicle when it is sold. The buyer must tax the vehicle in their own name before driving it. The seller receives an automatic refund for any full remaining months.
What is the tax rate based on?
For vehicles registered from April 2017, road tax is based on the list price and emissions. First-year rates vary by CO2 emissions, then a flat standard rate applies. Vehicles over £40,000 pay a supplement for the first 5 years. Pre-2017 vehicles are taxed purely on CO2 emissions bands.
