PlateCheck ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share your personal data when you use the PlateCheck website and mobile application (together, the "Service").

By using our Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide

  • Account information: When you create an account, we may collect your name, email address, and authentication credentials.
  • Vehicle registration numbers: Registration numbers you search for in order to retrieve vehicle data.
  • Payment information: Subscription and purchase transactions are processed by Apple (App Store) and RevenueCat. We do not directly store your credit card or payment details.
  • Support communications: Any messages you send to our support team.

Information collected automatically

  • Device and usage data: Device type, operating system version, app version, IP address, and anonymised usage analytics.
  • Crash reports: Diagnostic data to help us improve app stability.

Information from third parties

  • DVLA & DVSA: We retrieve vehicle data (MOT history, tax status, mileage records) from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency via their official APIs.
  • Experian Automotive: For paid vehicle history checks, we query Experian for finance, write-off, stolen, and keeper data.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal data to:

  • Provide and operate the Service, including vehicle lookups and history checks.
  • Process subscriptions and one-off purchases via RevenueCat and the App Store.
  • Send service-related notifications such as MOT and tax reminders (Pro subscribers).
  • Improve the Service through anonymised analytics and crash reporting.
  • Respond to support enquiries.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

3. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored securely using Supabase, which provides hosted PostgreSQL databases with encryption at rest and in transit. Supabase infrastructure is hosted within the EU/UK region where available.

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

4. Third-Party Services

We share data with the following third-party processors:

  • DVLA / DVSA: Vehicle registration numbers are sent to government APIs to retrieve vehicle information.
  • Experian: Registration numbers are sent to Experian for paid history checks (finance, stolen, write-off data).
  • Supabase: Cloud database and authentication provider.
  • RevenueCat: Subscription and in-app purchase management.
  • Apple: App Store payment processing and app distribution.

We do not sell your personal data to any third party. Data shared with processors is limited to what is necessary to provide the Service.

5. Your Rights

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, you have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Erasure: Request deletion of your personal data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Restriction: Request that we restrict processing of your data.
  • Portability: Receive your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
  • Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Withdraw consent: Where processing is based on consent, withdraw it at any time.

6. Cookies & Tracking

Our website may use essential cookies to ensure the site functions correctly. We may also use anonymised analytics cookies to understand how visitors interact with the site. You can control cookie preferences through your browser settings.

The mobile application does not use cookies. Anonymised analytics data may be collected as described in Section 1.

7. Data Retention

We retain your personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes outlined in this policy, or as required by law. When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required for legal or regulatory purposes.

8. Children's Privacy

The Service is not intended for individuals under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
